Here’s what you missed: October 2018

If you missed our October Signature Monthly Meeting last week, or if you know someone who really should have been there, please forward this email and be sure to Save the Date for our next Signature Monthly Event: November 6th – 5:30pm.

Moira Quinn, of Charlotte Center City Partners gave us a peek behind the scenes into what’s happening in Center City. She gave us insight as to what businesses, skyscrapers, and residential buildings will soon be changing our city skyline.

Among other things, we heard how BB&T Ballpark’s placement began on the back of a napkin, what to expect and how to get involved in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, and how the Carolina Panthers brought more than just football to the Queen City.

We also learned that Moira’s mother, Emma Quinn, now 95, was one of the founding members of the organization that formed NAWBO Charlotte! Thank you, Moria and Emma for your support of NAWBO Charlotte.

A Note From Our President

We were honored to have  Mayor Pro Tem Julie Eiselt read the Proclamation of October as Charlotte Women’s Small Business Month. Charlotte’s been ranked first in the country for growth of women-owned businesses and that didn’t happen by chance.

Decades ago our founding women, among whom are Emma Quinn and Elizabeth Miller, created a seat at the table for women in Charlotte and a national connection that continues today. So glad we are able to still stay in touch with these trail blazers.

Talking about national connections…Twelve NAWBO Charlotte members attended NAWBO’s Women Business Conference in Spokane Washington. This years theme was Work Well, Live Well and acknowledged the blurred lines we all have between our “work” and our “lives”.

At the national conference, NAWBO Charlotte earned the 4th Star in the Healthy Chapter Award program. The program lays out a blueprint for how to serve our members and complete all the legal and fiduciary requirements to run the non-profit. Many thanks to current and past board members who made this possible. Now on to the 5th star for Advocacy!

Scroll down for more details on Success in the Queen City/Power Players on October 25th our celebration of Women’s Business month and the 30th anniversary of H.R. 5050 the bill that allowed women to apply for a business loan without a male co-signatory.YES, that was as recent as 1988!!! Let’s recognize the women who paved the way for us today and come together to celebrate and be heard. There will be local leaders and partners there who would love to hear about your business and any challenges you are facing as you grow. It starts by having a conversation and a seat at the table.

Our fall membership drive ends on October 31st. If you are ready to join sign up here, and for those of you interested in learning more scroll down to see the details of the membership event at Toscana SouthPark on October 30th.

See you at the Bechtler,
Marise Kumar

City of Charlotte Annual Report

City of Charlotte Publishes Annual report. NAWBO commends City of Charlotte Business Inclusion Department (CBI) for reporting gender and ethnicity numbers for procurement.

A big thank you to Nancy Rosada of the Charlotte business inclusion program (left) and Vilma Betancourt O’Day (right) Immediate Past Public Policy Director for NAWBO Charlotte for working hard to make this happen.

Federal Reserve Small Business Credit Annual Survey
  • The Federal Reserve is doing their annual survey pertaining to Small Business Credit (Access to Capital) and they want input from the small business community.
  • Click the link below for more info: FED SMALL BUSINESS
  • Why this matters? We’re giving NAWBO Charlotte members yet another avenue to share their opinions on issues relating to access to capital. Results of this survey is used by policymakers, as the Feds mention in their website.
  • If we want policymakers to take us seriously, we must show up both digitally and in person.
NAWBO National Voting Competition

NAWBO National is proud to announce a voting competition among the chapters. Make sure you VOTE on November 6th. Look for details on how to tell NAWBO you voted. Three winning chapters will receive access to a special event during the next Washington, DC Advocacy Day in 2019.
